Banjo Love

Released March 28, 2011

I wrote and recorded this five song project over a weekend, I think it was March 2011.  I was learning how to play my first tenor banjo.  It’s “vintage,” which means it is old and still playable but also temperamental and the sound is not real pretty.  The frets are not quite right and learning how to coax sound out of that beast does not mean you have learned to play the banjo.  “Palms of Victory” is a traditional song and “Love is a Martyr” is a cover of a song by my friend Jerome.  The other three I wrote during the weekend when I recorded the whole thing.  It was a quick, dirty, lo-fi kind of project.  It happened at a time when I couldn’t figure out who I was as an artist.  It was a good way to try and get my groove back. It was a fun project.

Weird Folk

Released November 8, 2019

I never sat with the cool kids in the cafeteria.  I was a weird kid.  While everyone else was couple skating around the rink to the latest pop ballad or head banging in the back of the station wagon to some crunchy metal, I was listening to weird folk music.  I have always loved weird folk music.

My new record is all originals, delivered with a voice and a guitar.  There is nothing flashy or elaborate with the production.  It is one microphone and a song.

If you ate lunch with the cool kids, this isn’t for you.  If you were the fat kid, the nerd, a loser, or a freak, this record is for you. All of us oddballs grew up to be weird folk.

If you want to have a nerdy conversation about the multitude of ways to hold a coffee mug, there is a song here for you.  If you enjoy the quasi-spiritual concept of Jesus Christ having an American Thanksgiving, there is a song here for you.  If you want to get sentimental about your younger days spent playing weird folk music in the basement while drinking beers with your buddies, there is a song here for you.

Princess and the Hero

Rereleased May 24, 2019
Originally released August 1, 2003

This is the tale of a minstrel named Hero and his quest for love. Although considered a fairy tale, this story is not altogether fictional. Our story begins with travel-weary Hero leaving the road to pay a visit to Princess. Hero attempts to win Princess’s favor with a song. The magic of the song prevails and her heart melts. Upon attaining the prize he has desired, Hero fears he must leave his minstrel life. He sells his guitar to give Princess all the riches he can provide. In turn Princess sells her riches to buy a guitar for Hero. This story has no happily ever after, but a decision to be made. Despite the uncertainty of how life will end or where the journey will lead, Princess and the Hero determine to make the journey together. Unafraid of the cliche, this is a simple love story not altogether uncommon. Above all else, this is a tale of the joy found in undeserved blessings.
