The old man stood on the top of the hill 
With his son and a very sharp knife
His loving God demanded for payment
A living sacrifice
The good Lord said, hold it there man
I was just kidding
Check the bushes and you will find tied up a ram
He said, I was just testing you Abe
You must love me above all else 
For I am who I am
The old man didn’t get the joke 
But he guessed he passed that test
He’s never been so scared in his whole life
He said, loving his son that much 
Was like taking that great big knife 
And carving out a little piece of himself

The phone rang the other day
Gram said she didn’t know who to call
She thought that she would call me

She had just lost husband number three

It’s like using a great big axe
And taking a chunk out of my hide
She said, I’m getting older and fatter boy

Get back up on that horse and try again
This time I was sliced too thin
